Bela has a huge ego.

Bela has a huge ego that is very easily bruised and when it does induces pouting, grumbling, and generally angry reactions. While she is good at the job she does, and probably deserves to have some of that ego, she isn’t very good at pretending she doesn’t have one. She’s very much a five year-old, spoiled, Daddy’s little girl when she doesn’t get her way, and while she does her best to cover it up and remain relatively professional when she’s around other people—it doesn’t necessarily stop her from throwing a frustrated fit later. If someone crosses her, she can’t let it go until she’s managed to cross them back, and she never lets a debt go unpaid for too long. It doesn’t sit right with her superiority complex to have someone say to her that she “owes” them. Because that puts her beneath them, and that’s just not the way things work.

Despite being a “truly awful person” (Dean’s words, not mine), Bela is incredibly fun, and fairly easy to write. She’s professional, egotistical, opportunistic, aloof, and fairly greedy, but she has her reasons for acting the way she does, and doesn’t like going into them in too much detail. While the brothers, and the viewers at home, have done their best to try and figure out why she is the way she is, I think it’s possibly as simple as Bela being self-protective. She knows that if she gets too close, she’s only going to get hurt, therefore she doesn’t get close—keeps everything at arm’s length as much as possible. She feels it’s the only way she’s going to get by, and if that huge ego makes her less desirable to everyone else—then so be it.
