OOC: Fanfic Meme taken from
rude_not_ginger
This focuses mostly on CSI:NY, Supernatural, Flack and Bela. (With the mini-tirade on Danny/Lindsay, which isn't meant to offend, just kind of came out.)
How about a brief introduction?
I'm Emily. I have waaay too many fandoms for my brain space.
What got you into fan fiction (and/or adopting muses)?
Fanfic: I started reading when I was middle school. I've always was the kind of person that likes to pretend I'm the Pink Ranger/Misty from Pokemon/Catwoman/Batgirl/Supergirl/the list goes on, so fanfic was just kind of what I did when RL told me I couldn't have imaginary friends anymore. The first fandom I really wrote for was CSI:NY, and it just kind of exploded from there.
Muse Communities: Uhh -- I started RP-ing in this smaller L&O based community, which wasn't really a Muse community, but then one came by that I was interested in called
dramaticmuses. Over there I wrote Dean Winchester (
dean_w), Dr. Eric Foreman (
drericforeman), Det. Don Flack (
det_don_flack), Kate Austen (
island_kate), and Candice Wilmer (originally mystery_candace). After that community closed (*tear*) I decided to try my hand in other communities with Flack, and then it exploded again, and now I have more than I know what to do with.
What kind of fan fiction do you write?
Mostly third person ficlets, occasionally I'll do a first person piece if the voice is strong enough. I'll do anything from strict canon to AU to crossover to heavy shippy stuff. Comedy, drama, character death -- I write what the voices tell me. Really.
Do you write for the same pairings/characters?
I'll write certain characters on a fairly consistent basis. Flack and Bela are pretty much my staples. I'll ship them with anyone, frankly, except I don't slash so much -- I have a hard time writing it, unless it's explicitly stated in canon.
What is your most popular fic and why do you think people like it so?
Probably Conned, with Flack and Danny from CSI:NY -- mostly because it's stupid comedy, and I beat Flack with a frying pan, and an eldery suspect talks crap about his mother. And it was fun to write.
Forget other people, what is the fanfic you've written that you're most proud of and why?
Tired of the Game. This piece broke my heart. Mostly because I DON'T WANT SAMMY TO GO EVIL! But the prompt begged for Evil!Sam post Dead!Dean, and I'm really, really proud of the description I put into this. I took the time to put in a lot of details and I worked hard to paint the right picture from Bela's point of view (and surprisingly, she didn't fight me very much on the fact that I actually killed her).
Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?
I usually find it pretty easy. Dialogue is incredibly easy for me. I usually hear the characters talking before I see any of the details, which is why I don't include a lot of detail in my writing a lot of the time. But I think that's also a side effect of the fact that I usually don't go for a lot of detail in my reading. I like snappy dialogue with just enough description to give you the general picture, and then leaves the rest up to your imagination. I just think that's more fun for me as a reader, so my own work kind of reflects that. I guess.
Plus, when you're writing fanfic, unless you're dealing with a new character, people usually know what things look like. So that's just me being lazy, I guess.
Write a few sentences of your favorite pairing or character.
...heh. Get back to me on that?I don't play favorites well.
Are there any fan fiction trends/cliches you hate?
I hate canon ships.
I mean, I'm a total shipper, but the way things have gone on my shows, when the ships I like go canon, the writers slaughter the characters to get the pairing to work a certain way. For example: Danny Messer and Lindsay Monroe. (No offense to anyone out there who likes them, these are just my reasons for disliking the way things went canon.) First of all, the writers turned Lindsay into a total emo mess in season 3, so different from the girl I'd come to love. Most of the time, I ignore whatever happened canonly speaking for her in season three, (aside from the trial and references to her past and things) because it was so OOC for her it wasn't even funny. Secondly, Danny was totally pussy-whipped. He'd lost his edge and snark that I loved in him, and the Danny I know most certainly would not have hopped on a plane to Montana for a girl who had given him the run around like Lindsay had. Would not have happened. Sorry.
ANYWAY. What I hate the most about the canon ships? The flock of fic writers and fans who watch the show just for the canon ship moments. When really? The show isn't about the ship. At all. And the fic that's written is so OOC and contrived, because these writers don't know the characters, and are just writing the ship for the sake of writing the ship. And pump out lots of really sappy fluff. And angst that is basically the same plot over and over again. (Like oh noes! Lindsay has been kidnapped by a suspect and may possibly die! How will Danny react and get along without her!!!!1!!1!!1) Which really, really annoys me.
That probably doesn't answer the question at all, but -- oh, well.
Are you guilty of any of the trends you hate?
I write really sappy fluff when I want to feel better.
What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still write for it?
CSI:NY! It was a fluffy Flack/Lindsay ficlet, and it was mostly cutesy for giggles because Flack and Lindsay? Have probably had a total of ten minutes of screentime together for the entire two and a half years Lindsay's been a regular. And yet they're one of my favorite ships. But that's the way my brain usually works.
Name your OTPs and explain what it is about them you love to write.
Flack/Food
Dean/Impala
I'm a big shipper, so I try not to OTP too much. I ship Flack with almost every female character who's ever been on his show (and then some from other shows), but I'm mostly partial to Flack/Lindsay, Flack/Angell and Flack/Stella. And Flack/Maka. And Flack/Peyton when I'm feeling cracky. Damnit, I like them all. As I've said, Flack's a whore. And when it comes to Bela, I'm quite fond of Bela/Dean, but I try to keep that out of it when I'm writing her as a muse, because 99.9% of the time, she (as a muse) wants to shoot Dean. In the face. Repeatedly. But personally -- they really need to have angry sex. (Or hate sex at this point, considering how the last episode went, but yeah.) I like really snarky couples. Because it makes for fun dialogue.
What would you call your writing style?
Getting away with the minimal.
Do you read other people's fan fiction? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
Of course. Although, I've found myself staying away from the hordes of fic out there, and focusing mostly on authors I know I like. And I'm a horribly sucky commenter. But anyway -- I'll read almost anything. I'm not that picky -- but I like dialogue driven pieces, and I like crack. And crossovers -- the more creative the better.
Name one thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or too shy to do.
Smut. Personally, I think I'm horrible at it, even when I'm writing with someone else, let alone writing by myself. I just -- most of the time don't go there.
Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
Me and criticism -- I hate to say this, but it really depends on the day. I mean, I like it when people give me the positives and negatives on my work. I want to know what you think I should improve on. That's helpful to me. However, when you criticize something in an earlier piece, whatever the case may be, and all you ever give me is negative criticism, if I'm in the wrong mood, I'll snap at you. I had a reviewer once who didn't like a character of mine, and that's fine. But when she reviewed again at a later point, she didn't say anything else about my work, she just complained (basically) about the same thing about my character. That I don't take so well. Because to me, it just feels like you're taking the time to come down on me for something I worked hard on and put my heart into, and it makes me wonder why your still reading my work to begin with. So, yes, criticism is good, but it's not really constructive (for me) if you only always tell me what I'm doing wrong.
When you write, is there anything that helps?
Nothing specific. Because that also really depends on the day.
What inspires you?
Everything. Seriously. Anything from sitting in a high school musical to just sitting in my dorm bored out of my mind.
Lastly, how would you sum up your fan fiction experiences and you as a writer?
It's such a stress reliever. It really is. Even if no one was reading it, I'd still probably be doing it, because I just -- can't not.
Tag some friends, because they'll hate you for it.

I wish I had the time to write him more, but my brain is crowded enough right now.
Maybe during the summer I'll start to try and pick him up again for a little bit.

And Flack/Food = OTP. But Flack's relationship with food might be a little hindered after Happily Never After and the food cart ordeal. XD
I did the meme too. XD (http://vivo-per-ardua.livejournal.com/32087.html) I wrote a few paragraphs on Flack/Anna, btw.
♥~! You are awesomecakes, and I love your muses.

Amy seems to be trying to cure me of that though. *eyeroll*

*dies* No kidding. She's also apparently trying to cure Anna's prudishness. Lol. I love it.

I happen to be someone that is really good to break into this with. I mean I'm not saying I'm fantastic, but I've been told that I'm pretty good at easing people into writing it. Babystepping over things and such? Plus I have Dean, I mean other guys/girls too but... Dean is in my head raising his hand so yeah. Aww he's like a little kid that knows the answer! So if you ever want to try something with Anna or Bela I'm totally game.

the ImpalaDean, so -- I've written her with him before.) But anyway. I'd definitely be willing to give it a shot. And of course, Bela's Bela, so yeah -- if you want, poke me the next time you see me online.
