[TM] Wake up.

“Wake up, Mama.”

Bela blinked an eye open, confused. The room was still dark, and a quick glance at the clock showed that it was far too early for anyone to be awake, and when her eyes fell on her son she smiled slightly, reaching out for his hand. “Darling, it’s the middle of the night. What’s wrong?”

“There’s monsters,” Cole said quietly, crawling up onto the bed and sliding under her arm. “Can I sleep with you?”

There was a slight rumble as Michael started to stir next to her, and he glanced over her shoulder. “Bela, what is it?”

“Cole had a bad dream,” she sighed, sliding an arm around her son to hold him close. “That’s all.”

Michael watched her for a moment. “And he’s climbing into bed with us why?”

“He’s a little boy, Michael,” she said softly. “It’s just until he goes back to sleep.” She could feel the look Michael was giving her over her shoulder and she raised an eyebrow as she looked back at him. “Oh, don’t give me that. You know if it was Lizzie at this age, you would have bent over backwards to make her feel better.”

Michael sighed slightly, before sliding his arm around his wife and pulling her closer. “Eventually he’s going to get too old for this.”

“Yes, well—not yet.”

Bela hit the gas once they hit the highway, trying to get as far away from what had happened as she could. She could still taste the copper tang of the man’s blood in the back of her throat, and it wasn’t a sensation she was all that fond of, but it was necessary in this case. No one tried to extort anything out of Bela, and if they decided to use her family, her son in order to do so, they were going to wind up with a bullet in their chest. And she could get away with it. She knew exactly how to do it.

They were beyond that at this point. Cole had been mostly in one piece and was now sleeping in the passenger’s seat next to her, safe and sound. When she’d heard from Sara-Rose that he was missing, she felt as though she couldn’t breathe. Mostly because she couldn’t bear to lose any of the little family she had, and this was something that was hers. This was something she got to keep, and she wasn’t going to lose any of it.

Not if he could help it.

On top of it all, she was the one who has gotten him into this mess. She had let him go into this life instead of keeping it away from him. She put him in the line of fire as oppose to keeping him from it. Regardless of the fact that she thought he could handle it, she had nearly lost him, and that wasn’t a settling feeling for her. Not in her mind.

Her son was sleeping right next to her, and he would be fine, but she didn’t know if she’d ever forgive herself for putting him in this position. Not so long as she continued to call herself his mother. And that was not a fun feeling at all.

(Oh Bela. I really like this.)

Eventually Cole started to stir beside her. His seat was leaned back, and he was leaned on his side, his back to the passenger door.

He moaned softly at the pain through his body from the beatings he kept getting. He moved to lay on his back and blinked his eyes open slowly. That still hurt too. "Mmm, where are we?" He asked quietly, trying to adjust to his surroundings.

"Like I've been beaten up with a four by four," he joked.

He shrugged and looked out the window. "For...coming to get me. For not telling me how stupid I was."

He nodded. Yeah he had learned. That didn't mean he wouldn't still let them beat him to a pulp before he handed his mom over.

"I know, Mom."

He relaxed back again and rubbed his fingers over his eyes.

He looked over at her with his green eyes wide and his bottom lip sticking out a bit. "Like what?"

"Sorry," he said. And he shut up, just waiting for it.

Cole rolled his eyes slightly. "Every job? You're kidding me, right?"

"Mom. Not every client is going to be trying to get to you through me."

He sighed. "Fine. I'll tell you where I'm going. If you want, you can put a GPS chip in my skull like they do for dogs."

He sighed deeply and turned to look out the window. "Fine."

Cole was tired still. He closed his eyes and leaned against the window with a soft sigh.
