[MW] Paul Bryant quote
[Set in

“Winning isn't everything, but it beats anything that comes in second.”
She wasn’t sure what kind of wind had blown Alec her way, but she was pleasantly surprised that it had, if for nothing else then just seeing the look on his face when he walked into her apartment for the first time.
It wasn’t because she was particularly gifted in interior decoration, though she supposed that that could have some hand in it. She just knew what he could see when he looked at the various objects and even if he couldn’t see those things, she caught his curiosity if nothing else. Each object had its own kind of history to it, its own story behind it, and apparently Alec had liked history a lot more than she had realized. So between her explaining while she fixed dinner, and him poking around through the various artifacts and items on her shelf, and the actual food itself, they managed to get through a good portion of the evening without getting to the question that was on everyone’s mind.
Why was Alec here?
He was sitting next to her on the couch, close and comfortable, while Jinx was stretched out on the floor in front of the fireplace, gnawing at the ham bone she had left for him with a slow, lazy contentment. He had just finished telling her about something House had made for him while he was in New Jersey, and the conversation dropped off. The two of them sat in comfortable silence, before she turned back to him, her hand landing on his leg lightly.
“Not that I’m not grateful for the company, Alec,” she began softly. “But how did you wind up at my door?”
He glanced back at her before shrugging. “I got in my car, turned it on, drove here from New Jersey. I can give you turn by turn directions if you like?” He gave her an innocent smile, and she shook her head.
“I mean—why? And where’s your family? Usually Winchesters travel in packs.”
At that, his eyes fell, averting towards the fireplace instead of looking at her. “Long story. Has to do with the Apocalypse.” A topic they mutually agreed they weren’t going to talk about because neither wanted to know the details the other had to offer. She wasn’t sure she wanted to let it go that easily, but the look he was giving her convinced him otherwise. She had no reason to push. She knew all too well what it was like to have something you didn’t want to talk about.
Instead, she just squeezed his leg lightly, starting to push herself up. “You should get some sleep. You look exhausted.”
“Not tired,” he said simply. “I’m okay.”
Bela glanced back at Jinx, and Jinx just gave her a look right back, clearly conveying what he thought about that particular statement. She turned to look back at him, and Alec blinked up in that innocent look again.
“What?”
“You do know what I did to the last Winchester who tried to tell me he didn’t need sleep?”
He paused for a moment, before rubbing the back of his neck. “I heard something about Rohypnol and scotch?”
She nodded carefully, before moving closer to him. “You could either spend the rest of the evening considering everything you drink suspect, or you can let me show you to the guest room and get some rest.” She brushed her hair back from his forehead gently before speaking again. “I can give you something to help you, if you need it.”
“No, I can do it on my own.” He got up, staying under her arm as they walked upstairs. He was quiet for a long minute, before looking back at her again. “Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Why do you do it?”
“Do what?”
“Help us. But only when we’re not asking or yelling at you for it. You never help when we’re asking nicely.”
She chuckled, pulling him closer with a bit of a squeeze. “Because when they’re yelling, I’m sure that they’re going to kill me for it, and when they don’t ask—it means they owe me.”
He watched her face carefully for a moment, before tilting his head slightly. “Or maybe it means more.”
She watched him back, before shaking her head. “Trust me, love. I’m only in it for the favor.” She wasn’t going to acknowledge that he was far too perceptive to be a Winchester. Not yet. She guided him the rest of the way into the guest room, before turning to face him. “You have everything you need, yeah?”
He nodded, before moving closer to her, letting Bela get the other arm around him and wrap him in a hug. His chin landed on her shoulder and he sighed. “Thanks, Bela.”
She pulled back with a small smile, giving him a quick kiss on the nose. “Anytime, Alec. Really.” He pulled away and went to sit on the edge of the bed to take his boots off and she turned back in the doorway, leaning against it as she spoke. “Oh, and Alec?”
“Yeah?”
“When it comes to you? It’s because I actually like you.”
He flashed her a bright smile, before nodding. “Night, Bela.”
“Goodnight, love.”
