[MM] Rachel Naomi Remen quote

[Set in [livejournal.com profile] heartand_soul.]

“Life is known only by those who have found a way to be comfortable with change and the unknown. Given the nature of life, there may be no security, but only adventure.”

Transplanting herself from London to America shortly after her eighteenth birthday wasn’t just her being adventurous, it was a necessity. Just like insisting she attend boarding school at the age of fourteen despite her father’s protests. Abby Winters had always been a smart girl—even if she wasn’t smart enough to stay at home and keep her father away from her all at the same time—and she knew that if her father couldn’t visit her, than he certainly couldn’t get to her. She was done with feeling used and dirty, and she wanted to be far, far away, as far away as possible. And in the end, she managed to do that far better than she thought she ever would.

In traveling to America, she put as great a distance between herself and her family as she could, and an ocean was just the way to do it. Given the fact that she wasn’t lacking the money for an Ivy League education, she enrolled herself in Harvard, majoring in history and art and hoping she could find some kind of job when it all was over. She kept her head down, stayed focused on her studies, and she wound up stumbling on to far more than she ever thought she would.

It wasn’t her first choice, being a thief. At least, it wasn’t until she got a real taste for it, conning her way through some of the most powerful people New York City had to offer, and not even batting an eyelash as she did. She was using them instead of having someone use her for once, and there was power in it, beyond anything she’d ever imagine.

Now she had everything she needed to survive. Money, excitement, intrigue. The antique store was just a front for what she really did, but it was enough normalcy to ground her and make her seem legitimate. It was the kind of life where she was in control and she didn’t want it any other way.
